Training your dog can be a unique challenge that most people see as being particularly difficult because they do not know how to go about getting started. But there are a few tricks and techniques you might try that could get you started out on the right foot.
First of all you might try a dog training collar that allows you to correct a disobedient dog from a distance. This is possible by using a remote to stimulate the dog when it does not behave properly. Now most people will not want to subject their dog to such a crude technique but it can be a good option if other efforts have failed.
Another thing you might try is to take your dog to obedience school. Unfortunately this is too expensive for most people to consider, and it also has the added drawback that you will not have been the one to train your dog, so there will not be as much loyalty instilled there.
There is a debate as to which works better with dog training: positive reinforcement or punishing for wrong doing. In most cases you will have to use a bit of both of these schools of thought if you really want to train your dog to behave properly and obey your commands. In particular, positive reinforcement might work better when you are trying to get the dog to do something that he would not naturally do, and negative punishments might work better when the dog believes he is doing no harm but actually is--like when he is not yet housebroken. People have had success with both methods but you will probably get the best results if you experiment and continue to use what works the best.
Of course the best part is that after you have your dog properly trained you can pretty much sit back and enjoy the lasting friendship that will result from having a well trained dog.
